Tuscany Murals# – Muralist# Carolee Merrill

vineyardI have painted many Tuscany murals throughout Orange County and Los Angeles County. This one is in Newport Beach in a private residence.  I painted it just after visiting Tuscany, and imbued the mural with my lovey experience.

I am fortunate to have visited Tuscany several times in my life for about three weeks each visit.  I am completely enamored with Tuscany- the lush Tuscan landscape reminiscent of Renaissance paintings, the friendly people, the wonderful food and wine.  Loved it all!

I have twenty years experience painting murals and signs. I have transformed the walls of hospitals, restaurants, hotels, churches, corporate offices, and private residences throughout California and Washington. Please contact me for a complimentary consultation.

“Carolee, thank you so much.  We are very pleased with the work that you did. You were diligent, punctual and precise in creating just what we wanted. We would be very happy to have you paint murals for us in the future.” – Judy Cruz, Property Management for Rite Aid
Here are murals that I painted for Rite Aid in Pasadena.  Rite Aid had wanted me to brighten a dark corridor from the parking lot to the stores.  The theme was the orange crate labels from the 40’s. I incorporated the art of four orange crate labels, and recreated the feel of Pasadena with the mountains and orange groves from the 40’s. The customers love it!  Here is a video of the murals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3ROkYHMViA

Jan Brueghel’s 16th Century Painting Mural# – Muralist# Carolee Merrill

I painted this mural for a client in Olympia, Washington. It is a reproduction of several Jan Brueghel 16th century paintings. This dome is in the master bathroom, which will give you an idea of the magnitude of the beautiful estate.  It had a library, a theater, a gymnasium and a museum.  My client owned these paintings which hung in the museum in his home.

“It is indeed a pleasure to give Carolee a recommendation for the quality of work performed and her pleasing cooperation. Carolee painted a ceiling dome in my residence in Olympia, Washington. Under difficult circumstances, she painted a wonderful mural without complaints and was very cooperative in her duties. Without reservation I recommend Carolee.” – Calvin Brach, Chief Executive Officer, KDOC-TV 56, Irvine, CA

Jose Cuervo Mural# – Muralist# Carolee Merrill

152-6-me-in-charlotteI painted the mural# above for a Jose Cuervo campaign.  It was reproduced for tequila bars in 13 airports across the country.  This picture was taken in the airport in Charlotte, NC at the Tequileria. I worked with the former Vice President of Jose Cuervo International to create the design. It was a great experience!

 The Legendary Park Plaza Hotel

“Carolee, thank you for the fantastic work!  You did such an amazing job repairing and restoring our ceiling. It was a pleasure working with you. I look forward to having you back to help restore the remaining areas of the building.”- Luis M. Moral, Property Manager, Park Plaza Hotel, Los Angeles

I had the honor of doing some mural refreshing at the historic Park Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. The murals had been damaged by film crews, and I was hired to help restore them to how they looked originally.

The hotel is just magnificent. It is reminiscent of a Florentine palace with lavish Romanesque architecture. The Renaissance-style murals that I refreshed were designed and executed by Anthony Heinsbergen, a noted painter of many Los Angeles cultural landmarks.

hotelThe hotel was built as an Elks Club lodge in 1925. The pool area hosted many indoor swimming events during the 1932 Summer Olympics. Eventually, the Elks sold the building, and it was transformed into a luxury hotel. Today the the Park Plaza Hotel is designated as an historical landmark. No longer a hotel, it is currently used in a variety of motion pictures, television series and commercials, and events for the Hollywood Elite.

As I worked in the ballroom I could feel the many parties, events and films that were created there over the years. Loved it!

Here are some pictures of the hotel, and what I painted.

Church and Religious Murals# – Muralist# Carolee Merrill

I painted this sky mural for Bethel Baptist Church in Santa Ana, CA.  I remember feeling terrified being 30 feet up on the scaffolding.  It surprisingly took me only a short time to adjust to it.  I actually felt so comfortable that eventually I found myself swaying to the music I was listening to. Here is a picture of me on the scaffolding.

My intent was to create a feeling of celestial opening.  I have been told by the people at the church that the parishioners love it, and that architects and designers have come to see the mural and have commented on how beautiful it is.

Here are pictures and a short video of the completed mural.

Ziing’s Restaurant Dragon Mural – Muralist Carolee Merrill

DragonMuralHeader

Here is the story of how I came to paint the Dragon Mural for Ziing’s Restaurant and Dueling Piano Bar in Fullerton, California.  I live in Fullerton, and was walking down Harbor Boulevard one afternoon, and noticed that there was construction going on in the restaurant. I ad a feeling they needed a mural, and  I went inside to find major renovation going on.

I spoke with Robert the head chef, and he explained that the restaurant was expanding, They were adding an additional bar and entertainment area for a dueling piano show.  I asked if they were planning to have a mural painted.  He replied that they were planning to have a mural painted of dueling dragons, but had not been able to find a muralist to do it.  I said that I could be that muralist.  I later sent him pictures of my mural work, and subsequently met with the owner, created the design, and ultimately painted this mural.

Ziing’s food is awesome, and the dueling piano bar is a blast. Please visit when you’re in the area.

“The dragon mural Carolee created is a beautiful enhancement to our restaurant.
She exceeded our expectations. We love it. Carolee is very easy to work with.
We are happy to recommend her.” – Robert Marenco, Ziing’s Restauran, Fullerton

Unusual Mural# for Malibu Seafood – Muralist# Carolee Merrill

I wrote this article for the Malibu Chronicle.

The mural I painted for Malibu Seafood Restaurant was a wonderful experience. I remember the first time I spoke on the phone with Michele, of Malibu Seafood, I felt a connection with her.  After we met she told me she had felt the same thing.  Even then as we spoke in general terms of what she wanted I had a feeling of what would be created.  She had said she wanted elements of highway 1 running through Malibu.

It was a beautiful, sunny day in February when I drove up to meet Michele.  I felt completely comfortable with her as though I had known her forever, and she later told me she had felt the same.  I loved the setting of the mural being across the street from the ocean, with the nature preserve behind it. The history of the restaurant has been a part of Malibu for the past 30 years.  It was a pleasure to get to know the patrons who have been coming to Malibu Seafood for years and consider it a home away from home for them.  Many of them thanked me profusely for painting the mural- as they felt I was doing it for them, which I was!

I started the mural on Monday, March 4th – exactly 6 months ago today!  Michele and I met to review the images I brought and we came up with the basic flow of the design.  I started sketching out the design and laying in the colors over the next few days.  Michele would meet with me every few days, then later about once a week.

There was an energy to the mural- in a way it had a life of its own. Some of the mural came to me in dreams and I would translate them into the mural the following day. Initially I would ask Michele before I would paint something new and different.  Later I would feel if Michele would like it or not – and just go with the feeling and do it. One example of this is the flying fish turning into butterflies. When she saw it she loved it!

Each of the panels of the mural has this morphing phenomena going on.  The environment is of one morphing into the next…. the sky of one morphing into the ocean in another, the highway with poppies and humming birds under the ocean.  It all looks real and normal until you look more closely.

Michele and I both enjoy the majesty, beauty, and playfulness of nature and also the mysterious truths of quantum physics, that every thing is interconnected with everything else.  The mural playfully portrays these truths.

It was totally fun for me.  The owners and I had a similar vision and outlook on life that allowed the mural to flow through my creative, free spirited self.  I welcome you to take a tour through the mural below, and also to visit Malibu Seafood.  They have the best seafood and view in Malibu!

Carolee painted a truly awesome mural for our restaurant in Malibu, Malibu Seafood.  The mural is 55 long and is a whimsical, surrealistic trip on Highway 1 through Malibu. She was completely committed to creating the very best mural for us, and exceeded our expectations.  I am happy to give her a resounding recommendation.”  – M.Ridgway, owner of Malibu Seafood
